Rakett was commissioned to realize a new work as part of the opening of KinoKino – Art and Film Centre in Sandnes, Norway.
We wanted to use this opportunity to activate their largest, abandoned and defunct cinema space: a beautiful room from the functionalist style building from the 1940’s.

Soundtrack of Your Night
What is left when the actual film is no longer there?
During the grand opening of the new culture house named KinoKino we invited the visitors to contribute with their personal stories relating to a movie they had seen. What music or sound was played? The written stories were projected on a screen and along played their selected soundtracks as part of a scaled down cinema construction in the middle of the space. Our collaborator for this installation, Kyrre Heldal Karlsen operated from the location of the previously used machine room using different techniques to activate the architectural elements of the cinema space in different ways. Heldal Karlsen is a light designer and made a comprehensive light installation, playing with shadows on the ceiling as well as on the old big projection screen, thus creating a dreamy, cinematic atmosphere.
Kyrre Heldal Karlsen creates lights, scenography and video work for visual arts installations, large scale concerts, theatre dance performances and festivals. He has filled the largest cathedral in Norway with silhouettes of crows and toured Europe with the art-metal project KILLL. He has also created new stories for the narrative paintings in Oslo City Hall and created various spaces for Norwegian and foreign dance companies through his lights and scenographies.
KinoKino is located in a beautiful building from the 1940s, an old cinema that was closed for some time, and was reopened in 2009 with a focus on film and art. The center wanted to invite new expressions and collaborations within the areas of creative use of technology within film, video, electronic art, animation and other artistic expressions.
KinoKino opened in 2009, but unfortunately already in 2012 the municipality decided to cut its funding and merge it with Sandnes Art and Culture House and a more general program. www.kinokino.no
